Australia: Its Media, Environment and Culture

Two of Australia's most famous residents

This eight-credit course will provide an overview of the Australian media and its environment. It will examine the media's role in reporting about and shaping the public's view about the unique natural resources and environment of Australia.

Among the issues that will be examined are environmental issues that have shaped Australian culture and identity; important environmental issues facing Australian society today; European colonization and the exploitation of fragile Australian land as shown in film, television, radio, newspapers, magazine, and other popular media; immigrant groups that interacted with indigenous societies to develop a unique multi-culture; and popular communication media that depicts and spreads cultural meaning in modern Australia. These issues will be examined through the study of Australian media (film, magazine, radio, television and newspapers) and by practical journalistic research and writing focused on Australia's physical environment and recent culture. Also examined will be development issues surrounding the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, land use and water controversies, and threats to Australia's unique wildlife and habitat.
