The University of New South Wales (UNSW) is one of the largest universities in Australia. It consists of 54 schools, over 5,000 staff and about 27,000 students (this includes approximately 5,000 international students - the highest number in any Australian university).

Over the last fifty years, UNSW has gained an international reputation for its excellent research and teaching in science and technology, commerce, medicine, the arts and humanities, law and professional studies.

The University has introduced many new courses and special centers to encourage teaching and research in fields which are not usually included in university schools (e.g. safety science, petroleum engineering, Aboriginal law, cognitive science, drug and alcohol research, marine science, women's studies, automation, acoustics, public health, management logistics, water management, water policy, remote sensing, theatre studies, food science, mines, and membrane technology).

UNSW has close links with Australian community. Some of these links have been made through Unisearch Limited, a research and development company set up by the University to provide specialized services and advice to industry, commerce, government, and the professions. UNSW receives more government funding for research than any other Australian university.

The University's Faculty of Medicine has facilities at four of the main teaching hospitals in Sydney. UNSW's continuing education programs, which cover a wide variety of professional fields, make a valuable contribution to education in the community. The University-sponsored National Institute of Dramatic Art, the School of Theatre Studies and Department of Music have greatly enriched the cultural life of Sydney with many activities in the field of the performing arts.
