Jabaru Sets the Tone at Mindil Beach
theThe sights and sounds of Mindil Beach Market in Darwin, Australia are apparent far before you reach the opening tier of a variety of food stands, musical stages, dancing aborigines and chaotic crowds. The people flocking to the conveniently priced merchandise provide as much diversity as the variety of the markets.
theJabaru set the scene for a music spectacle. Rodger Bradshaw, lead percussionist of the husband and wife band, calls Jabaru’s style “A unique blend of folk, ethnic, and reggae.” Jabaru blends the emotional lyrics and multiple flute sounds of Rene Bradshaw with the unique yet primitive sound of Rodgers’ tribal rhythms. Jabaru will captivate you with their distinctive blend of world sounds.
theOriginal music for original people boasts the slogan for Jabarus’ website www.jabaru.com.au. Jabaru has been a regular performer at festivals, markets and venues throughout Australia, New Zealand and Europe for more than six years and counting. For the last three weeks Jabaru has graced Mindil Beach markets setting up their venue at the opening tier of the market, and three more weeks are stamped on itinerary.
theJabaru has written and recorded three albums Zyan, Khanu, and they’re currently promoting their latest live recording Red Earth. Red Earth is an album inspired by the beautiful outback terrain, colours and nature during a nine month tour around Australia. Zyan and Khanu are two albums dedicated to their two children of the same name. Zyan Jabarus’ debut album won the sunnie award for best album in the folk/ethnic category in the year 2000.
theAt the other end of the market hundreds of people spread out armed with blankets and chairs along the beach to view what is arguably the best sunset in the area. Kevin Donelon of Melbourne drove many miles to enjoy this “Australian Icon.” Kevin further commented, “I enjoy the different nationalities, the fine cuisine, ethnic music, but the real reason everyone comes here is for the sunset”.

Jabaru has been touring various festivals, markets, and venues for over a year.
