Rugby League originated in England during the early part of the 1800's. It is an extremely physical game where 13 meatheads battle each other and score by either grounding the ball at the opponents' end of the field, or kicking it between two upright posts. Australia has the National Rugby League (NRL) which consists of 15 teams.

The State of Origin is an annual three match series that pits the best league players born in New South Wales against the best players Queensland can field. The State of Origin matches are the pinnacle of rugby league in Australia, drawing the same attention as the Superbowl in the U.S.

FAN BEHAVIOR

Rugby league in one sentence: "The game they play in heaven." -Alex, a fan.

Best place to watch the game: At the stadium. Fans from each team sit on opposite sides of the field. Try to sit close to the middle; thats where the crazy cheering fans sit.

Best people to watch it with: "I don't like watching the game with my girlfriend. She's not into it." -Adam, a fan. (Normally, your crazy mates are better game dates anyways.)

What to wear to a game: Normal, casual apparel. Dress warm, the stadiums are often cold. Striped scarves and hats are popular and sold at the stadium.

What to drink at the game: BEER of course. (Can we say it again?) Reminder: you can only get four at a time, so spend the money to get the drink carrier so you don't have to wait in the long line and miss the game. The clock won't stop for you to drink!

What to eat at the game: Meat pies and hot chips.

Advice for a fan/dumb American who has never been to a game: 1.) "Sit in the front row and listen to the body contact; no pads or helmets involved." -Alex, a fan

2.) Fans do not tailgate in the parking lot. That is an American tradition. Fans in Australia eat and drink at the game so get there early to get a good seat and a short food line. (The meat pies WILL sell out.)

Key terms that a fan/dumb American should know before watching a game:

1.) Grid iron- American football. (Australians call it this to distinguish from the other kinds of football.)

2.) Tinnie- Beer can.

3.) Flanker- A position in rugby which is always involved in the game and is considered the position that has all-around attributes including speed, strength, fitness and handling skills.

4.) Concession- A student priced ticket. It's cheaper!

5.) Golden goal- Sudden death overtime.
